If you have problems such as fibroids, endometriosis, or adenomyosis, and a hysterectomy has been recommended, but you are concerned about the prolonged recovery, there may be an alternative. Dr. Montgomery now offers Laparoscopic Supra-cervical Hysterectomy, or Mini-hysterectomy. This procedure involves laparoscopy, or “Band-Aid surgery” to remove the diseased upper part of the uterus. If the cervix or lower part of the uterus is normal, it is retained. The upper part, or fundus is removed through one of the 1/2 inch incisions, using a new device called the GYNECARE Morcellator, which can reduce even large fibroid tumors to small segments, for removal through a cylindrical sleeve. Only a single night overstay may be required, and because only tiny incisions are used there is no vaginal incision to heal, recovery is minimal. Most patients experience minimal post-op discomfort, usually no vaginal bleeding, and are able to resume normal activity, even work, in 7-10 days. Compare this to the 4-6 weeks required with traditional types of hysterectomy. Sexual activity may also be resumed sooner, and there is less likely to be discomfort or any “different” sensations with intercourse. Once again, Dr. Montgomery has taken the lead, as the first ob-gyn in the Cy-Fair area to offer this new, minimal impact hysterectomy.
